Art Deco parquet is the protagonist of a prestigious renovation in the former Town Hall of Menton, France
A prestigious renovation of an apartment in a historic building in the town of Menton, the pearl of the French Riviera, sees as the fil rouge of the entire project the Oak Herringbone Parquet in the Cadorin Art Déco finish.
AN EXTRAORDINARY LOCATION: THE BUILDING ONCE HOSTED THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPEROR FRANCESCO GIUSEPPE TOGETHER WITH PRINCESS SISSI
The apartment is located in a building constructed as a private residence towards the end of the 18th century, having a predominantly neoclassical inspiration. In the second half of the 19th century, it housed the Mairie (Town Hall) of Menton, and was the setting for the meeting that took place on 5th March 1896 between the President of the French Republic, Félix Faure, and the Austo-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph, accompanied by his wife, Empress Elisabeth Amalia Eugenia, known as Princess Sissi. The building also contained the first library of Menton. Facing south on the Plage de Fossan, where the waves of the Mediterranean often ridden by the best surfers in Europe roll in, it overlooks the Museé Cocteau, which safeguards the most important public collection of the artist, with the Séverin Wunderman Collection.
RENOVATING THE APARTMENT: AN INTERIOR PROJECT THAT RECALLS THE CLASSICISM OF THE BELLE EPOQUE AND THE HAUSSMANNIAN STYLE
The design challenge was focused on a complete internal renovation aimed at transforming multiple office spaces into a single and elegant apartment. The contemporary feel of the new environments becomes the background for an interior project that recalls the classicism of the French Belle Époque and the Haussmannian style.
The significant heights are emphasised through plaster cornices and decorations whilst the doors – redesigned based on the model of the original ones – represent a link with the history of the building. This classic context is paired with elements with Art Nouveau references, such as the iron and glass door in the living area, marked tonal contrasts in black and white and the Cadorin herringbone parquet present throughout all environments.
CADORIN PARQUET AS THE FIL ROUGE OF THE PROJECT
In turning to Cadorin, the client requested to proceed with recreating parquet with an Art Deco style, with a new production yet able to hark back to the old parquet that had worn or cracked over time, in bearing that same touch of finesse.
This is where Cadorin’s design comes into play, with the formation of a 60° oak chevron, in light but “antique” shades bearing an important difference: the edges of the planks are accentuated by an increased bevel and are darker in tone. The result is clearly visible, as is the truly remarkable reference to the old cracked parquet.
For all the areas within the apartment, the Cadorin 60° chevron oak parquet in the Art Déco finish was chosen as the fil rouge of the entire project. Indeed, it recalls the very style of the early-1930s in the buildings and villas of Parisian architecture. As a manufacturer known for its brand of high-quality and beautiful wooden flooring, Cadorin uses the “crème de la crème” of European oak for this creation, cut into 60° thin pieces of wood juxtaposed and brushed for a production that involves the infinite grain of this elegant wood.
Here, the herringbone cut results in a less pointed design than the traditional 45° chevron, being much softer and deviating significantly from traditional chevron parquet to achieve an end result that presents an innovative and exclusive design combining tradition and modernity.
